Archival Awareness

October is National Archival month in the United States. Visit the Society of American Archivists site to learn more, and for other archival information and events that is happening all year long.

The National Archives Records Administration (NARA) has over forty facilities across the United States. Find the closest one nearest you.Need help with your home archives? See what NARA recommends on how to preserve and care for your family records.

The archival council, PARBICA Meetings, will provide more information regarding good governance in the Pacific region.

The Pacific Manuscripts Bureau copies archives, manuscripts and rare printed material relating to the Pacific Islands. The aim of the Bureau is to help with long- term preservation of the documentary heritage of the Pacific Islands and to make it accessible.

The International Council on Archives (ICA) help promote preservation and use of archives throughout the world.

Education

Do you currently work or volunteer in an Archives and want to learn the basics of the profession? Then, here are two certificate programs that might interest you:

• The Western Archives Institute is a two week program usually held during the month of June at determined site in California, and is sponsored by the Society of the California Archivist.
• Those of you who live on the east coast of the United States may want to try The Modern Archives Institute. This is a semi-annual, two week certificate program usually held in January and June at the National Archives in Washington D.C.

Advanced Education: In the United States many library master's programs have the option to specialize in archives. However, if you want to concentrate solely on archives, then, it is recommended to check-out the Centre for Archive and Information Studies from the University of Dundee, Scotland.

Remember to visit your local archives, historical societies or special collections. They are more than just a repository, they are culture!
